The Audience Name

Ainda Aqui

Some things, when answered, were the question all along.

A woman dictates her memoir into a tape recorder in a stone house above Cabeceiras de Basto. She is eighty-one, and the audience that has been listening for four thousand years has, for the last thirty, been listening to her.

Aurora Coutinho was eight years old when her mother put a parchment in her hand and a tracing of an old atlas beside it and told her to copy what she saw and ask no questions. She was twenty-four when she crossed the Andes with a folded alpaca cloth and walked the third bend at Mama Killa Tika and found a path-marker plank with two words newly cut into it. She was forty-one when she understood, sitting alone in a kitchen on a winter morning, that the words on the plank were the answer to a question she had been asking since the parchment.

The fifth volume of The Spiral Continuum carries the line across the keeper’s life — from the morning the question first arrives, through the long apprenticeship of carrying it, to the moment the answer comes back in her own voice. A memoir in the long Portuguese tradition: patient, plain, and merciless about what it has cost.

Some things, when answered, were the question all along.
