The Convergence

A Prequel

Before page one of Book One — three lives the trilogy will never separate again.

Iris Lettsome was reading sugar-mill windows on St. John long before the day at Annaberg when the windward aperture stopped being a ruin’s accident and started being an instrument. Kwame Cudjoe was walking the cane-fire trails his people cut in 1733 and counting the spacing of his grandfather’s abeng song. Rafael Ribero was sitting in a Sevilla heritage-trust boardroom watching a senior council quietly decide what to do about a name his uncle had been waiting to see.

The fourth volume of Island of Bones runs the year before Book One as three separate threads. The Lead. The Partner. The Antagonist. Each one is doing the work that will, on a particular October morning in the U.S. Virgin Islands, become the same work.

The pleasure of a good prequel is not the surprise. The surprise is the trilogy’s. The pleasure of this one is the convergence — every private skill the modern team will bring to the chain, traced back to the morning it was first asked of them.

It ends exactly where Book One opens. From there, the trilogy already happened. From here, you’ll re-read it knowing what each of them was carrying when they walked into the windmill.
